OpenCart Upgrade Versions, what is best for me?
OpenCart version upgrades are not always as simple as you may think, apart from the fact that a lot of files have to be overwritten (which can undo custom changes you may have done over time) , just upgrading without a plan could cause you to end up with a broken site and a big problem!

There are many OpenCart versions from old version 1.5.1.x, .1.5.3.x, 1.5.6.x, 2.1.x, 2.2 ,2.3 through to the more modern OC3.x and latest OC4.x. You can’t just upgrade from an early version to the latest, it just doesn’t work like that unfortunately. Things like Extension/Version compatibility need to be considered as well as LAMP stack (server software versions for apache,mysql and php) versions and more. Major version upgrades are often a lot of work eg v2.x to v3.x or v3.x to v4.x.
Some key considerations to make are
- Are all your installed modules compatible with later versions of OpenCart?
- Is the current theme/design compatible?
- Do you have bespoke work done to the site that may be affected?
- Is the old code on your site clean, has a developer made bespoke changes to VQmods that could be affected by an upgrade?
- Are you using a module for SEO? Is this upgradeable to the newer version?
- A staging server will be needed to build a new site while keeping your current site online
- A migration plan will be needed once your new site is nearly ready.
- Product and category migration and database checking.
- Customers, Sales, Order History, Custom Reports etc migration plan.
